PROJECT OVERVIEW

First steps into mobile UX

I designed Flixfix, a mobile app concept that celebrates classic and vintage films. This was my first introduction to UI/UX design and mobile app creation. For this school project, we were given the freedom to design any type of film-related app. I chose to focus on old cinema, which naturally shaped the visual direction into something nostalgic, warm, and characterful. The project helped me explore app structure, user flow, and visual storytelling in a playful yet thoughtful way.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Where classic cinema falls short online

Many film apps today focus on promoting the newest releases, leaving classic films buried or overlooked. For younger users or curious cinephiles, this makes discovering and appreciating older films harder than it should be. The challenge was to design an experience that feels fresh and inviting while celebrating the charm and value of vintage cinema.

design opportunity

Reimagining film discovery through design

There is an opportunity to make classic films more exciting and accessible for a new generation of viewers. Instead of relying on typical movie apps that spotlight only the latest blockbusters, I set out to design a film app that curates older titles with care and creativity. The goal was to create a visually rich and engaging mobile experience that introduces users to the charm of vintage cinema through thoughtful UI design and nostalgic storytelling.

research

Getting to know UI/UX design

This was a school project where I designed my first mobile app. My main goal was to familiarise myself with the fundamentals of user experience and interface design. I focused on understanding hierarchy, basic UI elements, and the structure of mobile applications.

To start, I created simple sitemaps and task flows to get a clear picture of how users would navigate the app. I also studied references to understand layout patterns and interaction models that fit the theme of old films. This early exploration helped me build a strong foundation before jumping into visual design.

wireframing

High-fidelity mockups

After finalising the user flow and visual direction, I moved on to creating high-fidelity wireframes. This was where the app began to take shape visually. I focused on building a vintage aesthetic that matched the theme of old films, using classic film motifs and retro-inspired elements.

The wireframes reflected both the functional structure and the overall tone of the app, helping me translate early ideas into a clear, user-friendly design.

prototyping

Try it out yourself

I built an interactive prototype to bring the experience to life and test key interactions. It’s fully clickable and accessible below (click this link if it's not displaying properly):
